Edel Fox and Neill Byrne

Edel Fox and Neill ByrneHaving won the TG4 Young Musician of the Year award in 2004 at the tender age of 18, Edel is no stranger to the international stage. Over the years she has toured and performed with acts such as Cherish the Ladies, The Kane Sisters, Jackie Daly and Ronan O’Flaherty all over Europe, Asia, the US and Canada. Her newest project “The Sunny Banks” with fiddle player Neill Byrne has been very well received in Ireland and their CD is due for release in July 2013.

The combination of styles and influences between Edel and Neill has created a new and exciting sound. While their influences range from duos like Noel Hill and Tony Linnane, Caoimhín Ó Raghaillaigh and Mick O’Brien, and Tony O’Connell and Andy Morrow, they have a new fresh sound. The lively dancing rhythm from Co. Clare is still evident but their repertoire is completely different. Their music is a mixture of older traditional melodies and newer compositions which showcase their fun and bouncy style of music. Over the past few years, they have become well-known as a duo because of their unique sound and tune choices.

Together, they share a common interest in unusual versions of tunes and uncommon compositions from composers such as John Dwyer, Finbar Dwyer, Tommy Peoples, Charlie Lennon, Joe Liddy, Sean Ryan, Ed Reavy, Lorna Davey, Brendan McGlinchey, Paddy O’Brien (Tipperary) and Paddy O’Brien (Offaly). There repertoire also includes compositions of Edel herself.

Their performances are loved and enjoyed by musicians and music lovers alike. Their vast and extensive range of tunes appeal to those who love to listen to new and unheard compositions and their bouncy, lively dance music entices everyone to tap their feet and move to the music.

There new CD “The Sunny Banks” will be launched on Sunday 7th July at the Scoil Samhradh Willie Clancy. It also features 2012 TG4 Young Musician of the Year from An Rinn, Co. Waterford Caoimhín Ó Fearghail and Cavan bodhrán player Richie Lyons.

In August, they will embark on a three week tour of the US taking in Boston, Cape Cod and Assonet in MA, Burlington VT, Portland ME, Richmond RI, Fairfield CT, Coatsville PA, Washington DC, Baltimore MD and Syracuse NY along their way.

Considered two of the most exciting young musicians in the Irish Tradition, their performances are not to be missed!
