Breaking Trad is made up of Dónal Murphy (accordion) from Abbeyfeale, West Limerick, a winner of numerous All-Ireland titles on both button accordion and melodeon, Niall Murphy (fiddle) from Camlough, South Armagh, a winner of multiple awards including the All-Ireland Senior Fiddle competition, Fiddler of Dooney and Fiddler of Oriel, together with multi-instrumentalist Mike Galvin, who has vast experience working in a wide range of musical styles from rock to traditional.
Between them, they have toured extensively, performing at major festivals and music venues and touring with some of the biggest names in several different musical genres, including Four Men and a Dog, Cara Dillon, De Dannan, Dance star Michael Flatley, Bluegrass guitarist/singer Dan Tyminski (Alison Krauss and Union Station), Country legend Randy Travis and many more. Their music has been described as ‘dazzling’, ‘unorthodox and unique’, and ‘high octane’. This powerhouse band is reviving traditional music with a fresh and modern twist and has recently released its eponymous debut CD.
Special guest with the band tonight is Gino Lupari, aka ‘king of the bodhrán’ and frontman with the much loved 1980s band, Four Men and a Dog. As a percussionist and vocalist he has recorded and performed with Sinéad Ó’Connor, Shane McGowan and the Popes and has appeared in the BBC drama The Passion. Gino is a man of enormous charisma; if he wasn’t such a fine musician, he’d undoubtedly be a comedian.
Seven Glens, an impressive and versatile band of young musicians from Sliabh Luacra, are guitarist Cathal Flood, vocalist and musician Bríd O’Shea, dancer, musician and vocalist Ciara O’Shea, along with Niamh Dalton on concertina and whistle, Michael Kelliher on melodeon, accordion and harmonica and Seán Kelliher on mandolin, banjo and harmonica.
The band brings many influences to its music, especially from the Sliabh Luachra tradition, combining them with a wide and varied repertoire to create a modern, lively and unique sound.
